Kendig Square location closing

Kendig Square location closing

After 16 years in Willow Street, we are closing the Just Press Play in Kendig Square to pave the way for something bigger and better--something MEGA. We know some of you will be sad to hear this announcement and it's bittersweet for us, too. Opening a video game store in Kendig Square was our dream for many years, and since then we've achieved more than we ever imagined. Now it's time for us to dream bigger, to reach higher, to advance to the next level. This isn't Game Over, not by a long shot! We've got big things in store and we can't wait to tell you more about our plans over the coming year.

May 19 will be our final day at Kendig Square, and starting in March we will begin discounting almost everything in the store in a huge liquidation sale to give back to all of our customers. Even most of the museum items will be for sale! We want everybody who can to come out and remember the good times we've had there, and hopefully take something home.

To everyone we've met and connected with at Kendig Square, we are forever grateful to you. You believed in us and supported us over the years; it's thanks to all of you that we have this opportunity to grow! We encourage you to shop at our Centerville store, just 15 minutes down the road from Kendig Square, where you'll find the same great service and selection that you expect from Just Press Play.

We'll have more to share with you very soon. It's hard to wait! We're excited for what's next and you will be too, so stay tuned!

The Road to 2025

The Road to 2025

Hey everyone, we’ve got some exciting news to share with you all! We can’t say too much yet, but 2024 is going to be a banner year for Just Press Play. We’re leveling up, powering up, and going into hyper mode!

Over the next 12 months, we’ll be rolling out big changes and dropping some epic announcements, but don’t worry! It’s all building up to something MEGA in 2025… and we think you’re going to love it!

Here’s our first announcement: we’re extending the hours at our flagship store, Lancaster Shopping Center! Looking back at 2023, we were floored by how many people visited our stores; we’re truly grateful for that. This change will help us accommodate more customers and better fit into your busy schedule. The new hours will begin next Monday, January 22nd, and ONLY at our store on Lititz Pike.

Stay tuned for more!

Vinyl Record Section Expanded!

Vinyl Record Section Expanded!

We've got exciting news for Vinyl Record Collectors! Just Press Play has now DOUBLED our capacity for vinyl records at Lancaster Shopping Center on Lititz Pike!

There are now thousands of curated vintage albums to choose from, including rock classics, heavy metal, obscure punk, rare jazz, hip hop, and much more. We had so many great albums that we couldn't fit before, and there are so many more we still want to add! We're passionate about music and preserving physical media -- a digital .mp3 will never hold a candle to the experience of opening a record sleeve, admiring the artwork, placing the vinyl on your turntable...and letting that needle drop. There's just no comparison.

With this extra space for records, we're also adding brand new releases and new pressings of perennial favorites, not to mention chiptune albums, video game soundtracks, and movie soundtracks. We aim to carry the music that matters to you--so drop us a line and let us know what vinyl records you want to see at Just Press Play!

Below you can see just some of the new albums that we have in stock--and there are plenty more where those came from!

Cyberpunk 2077

Live your dystopian cyberpunk dream in Night City, when Cyberpunk 2077 arrives (at long, long last) on November 19th!

In the future, or at least in the Cyberpunk 2077 version of the future, you can customize everything about yourself: your face, your hair, your clothing style, your cyberware (tech enhancements grafted to your body), and even your, um, nether regions. You'll choose from one of three "Lifepaths" (Nomad, Street Kid, or Corpo-Rat) that will determine your character's backstory, dialogue options, and side quests as you explore the neon underbelly of Night City. Prepare to be immersed in a living (and perhaps dying) cityscape that's crawling with mercenaries and bio-enhanced thugs, a city that recalls cyberpunk classics like Blade Runner or William Gibson's Neuromancer. And did I mention that Keanu Reeves is in this game?

Legends are made in Night City. Who will you be?

Super Mario 3D All-Stars

"Let's-a go!"

Nintendo is celebrating the 35th anniversary of the Super Mario series with video games, merchandise, an Augmented Reality Mario Kart for your living room, and more, but the most exciting announcement they made was the imminent release of Super Mario 3D All-Stars: a star-studded collection that features Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, and Super Mario Galaxy for the Nintendo Switch. Fans were over the moon (or over the Moon Kingdom?) with delight to see the return of such iconic Super Mario games, two of which haven't seen any form of re-release prior to this collection. For all the love that Nintendo shows to 2D Super Mario games, the beloved Italian plumber's adventures in the third dimension are only occasionally acknowledged - a Nintendo DS port of Super Mario 64 and a polygon costume in Super Mario Odyssey come to mind.

In 1996, Super Mario 64 re-invented the franchise and pioneered the 3D platforming genre. It introduced camera controls, wall jumps, Metal Mario, penguin murder, and so much more--it's hard to overstate the impact of SM64 when its influence is still present in today's games. The GameCube's Super Mario Sunshine built on its predecessor with a larger, livelier overworld and a graphical overhaul that was a huge step up from the N64's blocky sprites. It introduced Bowser Jr. and the water-spewing FLUDD (which lives on in Super Smash Bros.), as well as bringing Yoshi back as more than a cameo. Finally, Super Mario Galaxy launched our red-capped hero into space, where he met Rosalinda and the Lumas, transformed into a Bee and a Boo, and navigated planetoids with varying gravity.

Each of these games is an important contribution to Mario's history--they took risks and pushed the series into new territory with great success. If you haven't played these games before, you owe it to yourself to try them now. But take note, Nintendo says this collection will only be available for a limited time, until March 2021. Don't wait!

Super Mario 3D All-Stars debuts on the Nintendo Switch on September 18th, 2020. Pre-order your copy today and get 25% OFF a pre-played game or movie!

The Last of Us Part 2 - Image 1
The Last of Us Part 2 The Last of Us Part 2 - Image 2 The Last of Us Part 2 - Image 3

The Last of Us Part 2

Sometimes, survival means making tough choices. In 2013's The Last of Us, Joel and Ellie suffered through difficult decisions again and again, making sacrifices to survive, but they developed a bond to rival any father-daughter relationship. The ending left players questioning whether Joel had made the right call, whether all that they'd endured had been worth the cost.

Seven years later (five, in-game), The Last of Us Part II isn't going to make those questions any easier, and the hard choices will only multiply. While most action games normalize violence and dehumanize our opponents, such that we don't bat an eye at killing wave after wave of our fellow man, the team at Naughty Dog decided to make us feel each death and take ownership for the violence we commit. Each person in The Last of Us Part II has a name, as do many of the dogs, and when you kill someone's friend or pet, you'll hear them cry out those names in shock and pain. It was easy to justify killing in the first game, when survival--and a possible cure--were at stake, but in TLOU2 the story appears to be one driven by vengeance. Will that motive be enough to rationalize Ellie's actions? To assuage our guilt for killing someone's dog?

The Last of Us Part II will take us back to a world decimated by pandemic and rife with violence and struggle--a world that is more similar to our own now than when the first game was released. It promises to test our morality, and perhaps it will give us a new perspective on current events. Although we can't wait to return to the story of Joel and Ellie, it's hard not to feel some trepidation about where that story will take them--and us.

The Last of Us Part II arrives on PlayStation 4 on June 19, 2020. Pre-order your copy today and get 25% OFF a pre-played game or movie!

Our Plan to Re-Open

Here is an update on our plan for re-opening Just Press Play stores responsibly in the wake of the COVID-19 quarantine:

Just Press Play will return soon!

UPDATE - Store Closings, Animal Crossing, Doom Eternal

By now most of you have heard that Governor Wolf has issued a state-wide closing of non-essential stores, and many of you are wondering what that means for us and for your pre-orders.

Here's what's going on:

We will take this all one day at a time and we'll keep everyone in the loop as best we can. We've been informed that competitors are staying open against the Governor's wishes, and we're not really sure what to make of that.

We're a small family-owned business and it's important to us that we do right by our community and our employees. A two week (or longer) closure would be very hard on us all, so we're looking into if and how we can continue to do business and serve our local customers--stay tuned while we figure this out.

Thank you all for your continued patience and support--we couldn't do this without you! Please stay safe and healthy!

Final Fantasy VII Remake - Image 1

Final Fantasy VII Remake

Some things never change, some things do. The way Final Fantasy VII made us feel in 1997, as a groundbreaking epic JRPG unlike anything we'd played before--that will never change. But booting it up today on the PlayStation... well, time has not been kind to polygon graphics from the 90s. It's still a phenomenal game, but good luck convincing kids to play that instead of this week's battle royale game.

The good news is that Final Fantasy VII Remake is finally, FINALLY almost here! Officially announced in 2015, FFVII Remake has been building anticipation for 5 years (Kingdom Hearts fans are probably rolling their eyes at such a short wait) and is finally due to arrive on April 10, 2020. And although we know it's being broken up into multiple games (and we don't know how many), that shouldn't be upsetting. Yes, it means more waiting, but it also means more time we get to spend with Cloud, Barret, Tifa, and Aerith (especially Aerith!). Final Fantasy VII managed to fit a remarkable amount of plot and characterization into 3 discs, and Square Enix's biggest fear in remaking it was always that they would have to cut content from the original to make it work. By expanding it into more than one game, they get to flesh out the world in new detail instead of making sacrifices, and they have the original director, designer, and writer guiding the development.

Remaking a beloved classic is still a huge challenge, especially after more than 20 years have passed since the original game. Not only are they contending with rebuilding the game from the ground up, but with a shifted social climate, decades of gameplay evolution, and the expectations of fans who grew up loving Final Fantasy VII. Changing the game at all is going to step on the toes of some fans' nostalgia, but maybe that's okay if it brings Final Fantasy VII to a new generation of gamers. The screenshots certainly look gorgeous and the early reports are glowing. Will Final Fantasy VII Remake make us feel the way we did when we first played the original? Only time will tell...but we can't wait to find out!

Final Fantasy VII omnislashes its way onto the PlayStation 4 on April 10, 2020. Preorder your copy today and get 25% OFF a pre-played game or movie!

Super Mario Maker 2

The original Super Mario Maker for Wii U and, later, 3DS was a delightful game that opened up the Mushroom Kingdom to the imagination of creative fans. We'll soon see the release of Super Mario Maker 2, but how do you improve on such a runaway success?

First of all, you bring it to the wildly successful Nintendo Switch, a console that sold more units in 10 months than the Wii U did in its lifetime. Then, you add more tools, more styles, more enemies, more content--more everything! Want to design a course in the style of Super Mario 3D World, complete with Cat Mario? You can do that! Want to add a slope or change the clear goal? You can do that, too! Third, add collaborative building and gameplay--what better way to create and experience Super Mario levels than with your friends? And if you really want to complete the package, you add a Story Mode where building courses is all part of reconstructing Peach's castle. All of that and more can be found in Super Mario Maker 2, so put on your hard hat and your thinking cap and get ready to make more Mario!

Super Mario Maker 2 arrives on the Nintendo Switch on June 28th! Pre-order your copy today to get 25% OFF a pre-played game or movie!

Dynamax and Everything Else Revealed in Today’s Pokemon Direct!

In case you missed it, this morning's Pokemon Sword and Shield Direct gave us a huge glimpse at the Galar region, a release date for the new games, as well as new Pokemon and new mechanics on the Nintendo Switch!

Dynamax and Max Raid Battles

Supersize your Pokemon with the new Dynamax mechanic, a technique you can use once per battle to turn your Pokemon into a colossal titan with super-powered moves! The Dynamax feature is reminiscent of Mega-Evolutions, but much more impressive in practice. Pokemon Gyms in the Galar region will be stadium-sized to accommodate this special style of battle! You'll sometimes even encounter Dynamax Pokemon in the wild for an extra challenge.

Also revealed were Max Raid Battles, a series first, where up to four trainers can team up using the Nintendo Switch WiFi Direct connectivity. These Max Raid Battles, like the Raids in Pokemon Go, will allow a team of trainers to battle against a single powerful Dynamax Pokemon.

New Pokemon Unveiled

The Pokemon Direct also introduced several new Gen 8 Pokemon, including Wooloo (the one that looks like a sheep), Gossifleur (the one that looks like a flower) and Drednaw (the one that looks like it will bite your face off). Gossifleur can evolve into Eldegoss, but no other evolutions were revealed yet. A raven Pokemon, Corviknight, will fly you from town to town, the Pokemon equivalent of Uber. We also got our first glimpse of Pokemon Sword and Shield's legendaries, which made clear why the games are named "Sword" and "Shield"--the legendary Zacian carries a sword, and Zamazenta has a shield for a face.

Wild Area

In between towns, Pokemon Sword and Shield will feature a large open-world field known as the Wild Area, where you'll encounter different wild Pokemon depending on the weather, time of day, and which part of the region you're in. This is a very exciting update to series, which is typically limited to linear routes that crisscross the region.

Pokemon Sword and Shield will arrive on Nintendo Switch on November 15, 2019! Pre-order your copy today and get 25% OFF a pre-played game or movie!

Smash those crates for a Bowling Bomb or a Warp Orb and load up on Wumpa fruit to "Juice Up" your power-ups and hit your opponents even harder! Crash Team Racing will have you hugging the turns on tracks inspired by classic levels (exclusively on PS4, you can even visit the Retro Stadium, a blocky blast from the past, in all its polygonal glory), shaking off TNT, and testing the limits of your friendships with every race. Try not to Crash and burn!

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled will cross the finish line onto PlayStation 4, XBox One, and Nintendo Switch on June 21, 2019. Pre-order your copy today and get 25% OFF a pre-played game or movie!

7 Reasons to Buy the Xbox One S All-Digital? - Image 1
7 Reasons to Buy the Xbox One S All-Digital?

7 Reasons to Buy the Xbox One S All-Digital?

Why doesn't anyone seem to care about the new Xbox One S All-Digital, the disc-less console that was released only two weeks ago? Why isn't Microsoft's newest system listed among the top 10 best-selling Xbox One consoles on Amazon? Why isn't GameStop even selling the Xbox One S All-Digital?

It's as if people don't really want a digital-only console like the Ouya or the PSP Go, or they think the All-Digital Xbox is just a cash-grab, but how could that possibly be? Microsoft has so rarely been wrong about what the gaming community wants.

To help you appreciate this poor, neglected console, we've racked our brains and cobbled together 7 compelling-ish reasons that you should buy an Xbox One S All-Digital console.

1. You like to pay more for less

The Xbox All-Digital launched with a pricetag of $249, an interesting choice given that the standard 1 TB Xbox One S--essentially the same console but including a disc drive--is readily available for a lower price. Now, some people would want to get more value for a higher price, but Microsoft believes that you'll pay a premium for a stripped-down experience without the complication of clunky old discs.

2. You don't like to own your own games

Buddhism teaches that everything is temporary, so owning things isn't important. That's great if you go all-digital, because you don't really own digital games. When you "buy" a digital game, all you get is a temporary license. You can't trade them or sell them and--here's where it gets really exciting--they can disappear without warning!

3. Marie Kondo says you have too much stuff

Physical games take up space, but digital games only clutter your hard drive. If you run out of storage, you can just delete them; maybe you'll be able to re-download them later if they haven't been delisted.

4. You're sick of borrowing games from your friends (and lending them)

Don't you get tired of your buddies loaning you games? It leaves you with no excuse not to try something new. If you buy the All-Digital Xbox, you'll never have to borrow a game again.

Bonus: Your friends won't be able to borrow your games, either! If they want to try your new favorite game, those chumps can just go buy it themselves!

5. You already have a Blu-ray player

A video game console that also plays CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays? Stick to your day job, Xbox. If we want to watch movies or listen to music, we'll get a separate player for that.

6. You hate going to video game stores

Microsoft understands that gamers don't like to leave home or interact with people in real life, which is why they've been phasing out couch co-op as quickly as possible. The Xbox All-Digital ensures that you'll never even have to go to a video game store, because you'll be making all of your purchases directly from Microsoft.

7. You hate Christmas (and gift-giving in general)

Remember that magical feeling of Christmas morning, gifts piled under the tree waiting to be opened? Well, get over it. You can't wrap a digital code. You can't return them either, so you'd better hope Grandma got the right one.

There you have it; 7 practically believable reasons to buy the new Xbox One S All-Digital, which definitely isn't a flop.

Can you think of more reasons to buy Microsoft's new discless disaster? Share them on our Facebook page!

Days Gone

The highly anticipated Days Gone puts you in the boots of Deacon "Deke" St. John, a biker/bounty hunter surviving in a post-apocalyptic world. Story details are scarce, but we know that a worldwide pandemic has consumed much of the human and wildlife population, turning them into mindless "Freakers" that prey upon the living.

Deke travels the Pacific Northwest--a huge open world with a dynamic weather system--on his bike, making friends (and enemies) along the way and fighting through hordes of Freakers with various weapons and a sandbox combat system. He'll scavenge supplies from abandoned vehicles and use his wits to avoid ambushes and other dangers. He'll even revisit his past in playable flashbacks that explore the loss and regret that haunts him. Brace yourself for an action-packed and emotional journey.

All that holds them at bay are the city walls and the Freelancers equipped with mighty Javelin exosuits--upgradable flying arsenals developed generations ago. As a member of the Freelancers, it's your responsibility to defend humanity against the colossal beasts and monsters that rage outside the walls.

Does your squad have what it takes to go up against the Anthem?

Far Cry New Dawn

The post-apocalypse has never been prettier than in Far Cry: New Dawn, the standalone sequel to Far Cry 5. Following a global nuclear disaster, a new frontier has emerged in a beautifully ruined world reclaimed by nature. Vibrant plant life, known as "superbloom," paints the landscape in bright colors to create a more picturesque backdrop for your post-apocalyptic adventure. So many happy little plants, even Bob Ross would approve.

But things are far from peachy in Hope County, as survivors of the nuclear event must contend with ruthless Highwaymen who take whatever they want. In Far Cry: New Dawn, survivors must be resourceful--they'll have to craft tools, weapons, vehicles, and shelter from the debris of the old world if they hope to defend themselves. Fortunately they don't have to go it alone. They'll recruit anyone who can help, whether it's a Gun for Hire or a furry friend; survivors need all the support they can get.

It's a new world, with new rules, go out and explore it in Far Cry: New Dawn.

What video game release have you waited the longest for? It's been 13 years since the last main series Kingdom Hearts game, so there's a good chance that Kingdom Hearts III is your answer.

Kingdom Hearts III promises an epic conclusion to the enigmatic story, and will offer fans the chance to visit new Disney, Pixar, and Marvel worlds, like those that belong to Toy Story, Frozen, and Big Hero 6 (and we can only hope that Star Wars is in there too). After so many years, Kingdom Hearts III has a lot to live up to, but everything we've seen so far suggests that it's going to exceed our expectations. Will the story finally make sense, though? That's anyone's guess.

Just Cause 4

Why is Rico Rodriguez flying into a tornado in a wingsuit, with a rocket launcher and a grappling hook? Just 'cause. Or to be more specific, Just Cause 4. Truly, the Just Cause series is the Sharknado of video games, a sandbox full of awesome dangerous things that you can shoot at other awesome dangerous things because....um, reasons? Blow stuff up, launch yourself (or your enemies) into the air, hijack helicopters, tanks, and motorcycles, and in general just have fun exploring and exploding everything you can. And also stop a dictator or something, if you feel like it. There are so many other things to do, like turning cows into missiles or tanks into airships, that it's easy to forget there's a storyline to follow.

Just Cause 4 brings extreme weather conditions to the table, so you can count on tornadoes for breakfast, lightning for lunch, and hurricanes for dinner. Push physics to the limit because things are going to get C-R-A-Z-Y.

Pokemon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! and Let’s Go, Eevee!

If you haven't already heard about Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee!, then you must be living under a rock-type Pokemon. But you don't have to call Professor Oak on your PokeGear to get the details; we've got them right here!

Pokemon: Let's Go is simple and complicated. It's complicated because it's a semi-remake of Pokemon Yellow that borrows elements from the Pokemon Go mobile game and adds new features like co-operative play. It's simple because it slims down the 800+ roster of existing Pokemon to just the original 151 (give or take a few Mega Evolutions, Alolan forms, and new mythical/legendary additions) and takes trainers back to the familiar Kanto region where it all began. The mechanics are more user-friendly; wild Pokemon are visible (not random encounters), you catch them with berries and PokeBalls instead of battling them, and many of the quality-of-life improvements from later games in the series have been applied here as well.

Whether you're new to the world of Pokemon or a veteran trainer, there's plenty of fun and adventure to be found in Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu and Eevee!

Pokemon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Pokemon: Let's Go, Eevee! will start their adventures on November 16, only on Nintendo Switch. Pre-order your copy today and receive 25% OFF a pre-played game!

Fallout 76

Greetings, Vault Dwellers! Twenty-five years have passed since the bombs fell, and the time has come for you and your fellow humans to re-enter the world in Fallout 76! Build a base, explore the wasteland, seek out new friends, and above all, survive!

Epic open-world online multiplayer gameplay defines Fallout 76; it's an ambitious new direction for the series, but one that suits it perfectly well. As in previous Fallout games, you'll create your character with the S.P.E.C.I.A.L. system and forge your own path into the wasteland, but this time around you don't have to go it alone (unless you want to, of course). Fallout 76 also introduces the ability to craft anywhere using the all-new C.A.M.P. system (Construction and Assembly Mobile Platform) that will act as your base, your shelter, and even your storefront. And of course, the possibility of nuclear destruction is always looming on the horizon. Welcome to the post-apocalypse!

Fallout 76 will be released from the vault on November 14 for XBOX One and PlayStation 4. Pre-order your copy today and get 25% OFF a pre-played game!

Red Dead Redemption 2

We've waited a long time for Red Dead Redemption II to take us back into Rockstar Games' rendition of the Wild West, but that train is finally rolling into the station on October 26. Saddle up as Arthur Morgan, an outlaw with blood on his hands and mud on his boots, who rides with the Van der Linde gang in a story set 12 years before the first Red Dead Redemption. He'll cross paths with familiar characters like John Marston and Dutch Van der Linde, in a whole new adventure that adds depth to the events of the original game.

There's so much to do in this expansive open-world Cowboy Simulator, from hunting and fishing (with over 200 species of wildlife, each with unique behaviors, forming an incredible complex eco-system!), to base-building with your camp of outlaws (try bonding with them over a game of poker or Five Finger Fillet), to growing your hair and beard in real-time (the true sign of a next-gen game). But let's talk about the real focus of Red Dead Redemption II: the bond between a man and his horse. In RDR2, there are 19 breeds of horse, 59 coat varieties, customizable tack options, and your horse acts as both your inventory and your constant companion. As you ride across America on your trusty steed, galloping through the dustbowl or cantering between the redwoods, you'll forget about those pesky story missions and side quests, because your horse needs to be groomed or customized.

The world of Red Dead Redemption 2 is immersive and feels real. You'll have to live off the land, tend to your weapons, dress for the weather, and aim for clean kills if you want to eat well. Come November, Red Dead Online will be available in Beta so you can populate the world with up to 32 players in narrative, cooperative, and competitive modes. It'll be a Western experience like no other!

Red Dead Redemption II hits the trail on October 26th. You can pre-order your copy today at any Just Press Play location, and we'll give you a 25% OFF coupon for a pre-played game or DVD!

Call of Duty Black Ops 4

Say what you want about the Call of Duty franchise, but Treyarch knows how to give Black Ops fans what they want, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is no exception. Robust and addictive multiplayer? Check. More zombies than you can shake a thundergun at? Check. A battle royale mode to rival PUBG and Fortnite (and every other game hopping on that bandwagon)? Winner winner, chicken dinner.

Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII eschews the traditional campaign to focus more on the good stuff: a multiplayer experience that will keep players coming back, three completely unique Zombies campaigns that are available at launch, and the battle royale Blackout mode that features returning favorite characters and weapons from previous games. Ten Specialists will be available at launch, including Breacher, Rusher, Healer, Prophet (from Black Ops III) and Nomad (who has a dog now), and new features are incoming like the Fog of War (obscures parts of mini-map) and Guns Still Up mode. Zombies mode features three vastly different experiences: Blood of the Dead sees players fighting their way through (or out of) Alcatraz Prison, Voyage of Despair puts an undead twist on the story of the Titanic, and most curiously, IX takes you to Ancient Rome...but with guns and explosives. Is this an Evil Dead tie-in?

With so much to offer, Call of Duty: Black Ops IIII is poised to be the definitive Black Ops experience. The Blackout Beta received an overwhelmingly positive response, so count on that to be a staple of the Black Ops package in future installments.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 launches on October 12, pre-order your copy today and get 25% OFF a pre-played game or movie!

Marvel’s Spider-Man

Spider-Man, Spider-Man, does whatever a spider can....and soon you can, too! Insomniac Games, the developer behind Spyro and Ratchet & Clank, has crafted a new Spider-Man video game that is poised to swing past all of its predecessors. It's got everything that makes a great Spider-Man game: web-slinging, wall-crawling, Spidey Sensing, and good old Peter Parker-ing. But there's a whole lot that's new, not the least of which is a fresh approach to the friendly neighborhood superhero. This is no origin story; Marvel's Spider-Man puts you in the athletic shoes (sorry, the red boots had to go) of an experienced Spider-Man who's been fighting crime for eight years. He's got history--notably with Mary Jane, who is also a playable character here--and familiar characters have taken on new roles, so expect some surprises. Throughout the game you'll be able to level up and "evolve" your Spider-Man, progressing along different skill trees and acquiring different Spidey suits with unique abilities. You won't be the same Spider-Man when this is through.

If your Spidey Sense is tingling, it's because Marvel's Spider-Man swings onto the PlayStation 4 on September 7! There's still time to pre-order your copy and get a free 25% OFF coupon!

Jurassic World Evolution

If you've ever watched a single Jurassic Park movie, you probably know better than to accept an invitation to visit Jurassic Park (or any related islands or theme parks) for any reason, since it will almost certainly lead to your chompy dino-snack death--while Jeff Goldblum sadly shakes his head in a way that implies, "I, uh, told you so." But what if you were given the chance to build your own Jurassic Park? What if you could play God--or John Hammond, at least--and put together your own dinosaur menagerie dotted with gift shops and cafes where tourists could enjoy their last meals? Welcome...to Jurassic World Evolution!

Jurassic World Evolution puts you in charge of the park; it's sort of like RollerCoaster Tycoon if sometimes the roller coasters broke free and began eating your customers. You'll have to manage things like security, entertainment, science experiments (what could possibly go wrong if you crossbreed your own hybrid super-dinosaurs?), and your dinosaurs' appetites and happiness. Nobody wants to see a cranky T-Rex. And when the dinosaurs break out (and they WILL break out), it will be your job to contain them before they eat too many cash-carrying customers and avoid the ensuing PR nightmare.

The Jurassic World Evolution park opens for business on July 3rd, on PS4 and XBox One; pre-order your copy today and save 25% OFF of a pre-played game or movie!

If you don't feed and maintain your strength, then Dr. Reid won't be able to make progress on the cure; but if you overindulge your dark impulses, you may lose your humanity and those you were trying to save.

You'll have to walk a thin line between man and monster, choosing carefully how to use your supernatural powers and manipulating those around you in a web of interconnected souls. They're raising the stakes (pun intended) in this gothic tale. Your choices will have consequences.

Vampyr lurks in the shadows until June 5th, when it will be available on PlayStation 4 and XBOX One. Pre-order your copy today...or you might regret it.

Harvest Moon: Light of Hope

Harvest Moon: Light of Hope

Before Farmville and Stardew Valley and Farming Simulator, there was a little series called Harvest Moon that let you plant crops, raise animals, cultivate relationships, and manage a farm. Harvest Moon: Light of Hope brings the franchise to modern platforms when it launches on the PlayStation 4 and Nintendo Switch later this month. It's both a return to roots and a big step forward for the video games that put the charm in farming for the past 20 years.

Harvest Moon: Light of Hope arrives on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 on May 29!

State of Decay 2 State of Decay 2 - Image 2

State of Decay 2

What sets State of Decay apart from other zombie survival games is how it focuses less on killing zombies and more on protecting survivors and building them into a defensible community. State of Decay 2 ups the ante with a bigger world, more features, and the cherry on top--four player co-op! Work with your friends to build a base, scavenge for supplies, establish outposts, and clear out the undead to protect your most valuable assets--your teammates. Each character is procedurally generated, so no two simulations will be the same. Your character might be a strong leader, or have a high pain threshhold, or offer bonuses to your community...or they might have a handicap like asthma that limits their stamina. You'll have to make the most of your resources and always watch your back. And of course, try not to get eaten by zombies.

State of Decay 2 bunkers down on the XBOX One on May 18, so get your survival gear ready! Pre-order it today and get 25% OFF a pre-played game or movie!

Nintendo Labo: Make, Play, Discover!

Who else but Nintendo would take their hottest, best-selling video game console, and combine it with actual cardboard for a toys-to-life augmented reality game? Virtual reality isn't good enough for Nintendo Labo--no, the makers of Mario had to one-up the competition by introducing Cardboard Reality through a collection of imaginative, crafty games...and a cardboard mech suit that lets you feel like a giant robot. Nintendo Labo is a bizarre idea, but so was a Mario/Rabbids crossover Tactical RPG, so was a Donkey Kong game with bongo controllers, so was a collection of 5-second games curated by Wario. It's exciting when Nintendo gets weird and does something no one expected, and the hype for Nintendo Labo is just the latest example.

Build a working cardboard keyboard? Music to my ears.

Go virtual fishing with a homemade rod? I'll take the bait.

Invent custom programmable cardboard creations? I'm out of puns, just take my money.

Drink the Kool-Aid in Far Cry 5

The Far Cry series is known for pushing boundaries--both moral and geographical--with controversial storylines, dubious decisions, and exotic locales rife with possibility. Now, Ubisoft is bringing the series home to American soil with Far Cry 5, a satirical take on American extremism set in the wilderness of Montana. A religious cult is on the rise, determined to "take the country back" in the name of their beliefs, and only a small resistance stands against them. The Project at Eden's Gate wants you on their side when Doomsday rolls around. Will you drink the Kool-Aid communion with Joseph Seed ("The Father") or will you help take Hope County back from his crazy cult?

Far Cry 5 will be ready for the apocalypse on March 27, but you can pre-order today and get 25% OFF a pre-played game or movie!

Detective Pikachu commands a full vocabulary and the grizzled voice of a cop who's seen it all before. Will that be enough to help young Tim Goodman solve the mysterious disappearance of his father? And will the world of Pokemon ever be the same?

This Nintendo 3DS title will serve as the lead-in for an upcoming live-action Pokemon movie, starring Ryan Reynolds (AKA Deadpool) as the voice of Detective Pikachu.

God of War: Dad of War

In the trailer for the new God of War, Kratos' son asks him, "Can you kill something that big?" If he only knew.

Reborn in a different age, Kratos faces fresh challenges--like fatherhood--and a pantheon of Norse gods and supernatural creatures that will test his limits. Once the God of War, he now lives quietly among men, but the consequences of his past still come calling. Traveling with Kratos' son Atreus adds a new dynamic to the series, as protecting and mentoring become Kratos' primary focus, instead of his usual all-consuming vengeance. Atreus wrestles with his own inner rage--how will he react when he learns of his father's true nature...and his own?

With this installment, God of War is taking bold steps in a new direction. Kratos has traded his trademark double-chain blades for a battle axe, his Greek mythology for Norse mythology, and his revenge complex for a father-son relationship. This rebirth might be just what the series needed--and it certainly looks fantastic on the PlayStation 4! Kratos can kill titans and gods, but can he earn the title of "World's Best Dad"?

God of War will start making dad jokes on April 20th. Pre-order today and get 25% OFF a pre-played game or movie!

Shadow of the Colossus - Image 1
Shadow of the Colossus Shadow of the Colossus - Image 2 Shadow of the Colossus - Image 3

Shadow of the Colossus

Shadow of the Colossus was a ground-breaking game on the PlayStation 2, beautifully bleak and strangely discomfiting. It eschewed the hallmarks of big adventure games, like sprawling dungeons and talkative NPCs, opting instead for a quiet, minimalistic quest from one titan to the next, stabbing the life out of them and wondering if you're really doing the right thing.

Arriving soon on PlayStation 4, Shadow of the Colossus has been rebuilt from the ground up to be visually stunning and immersive, and to truly take advantage of the PS4 Pro's graphical capabilities. Expect to be impressed when you see the colossi looming in HD, with higher framerates and tighter controls than the original, and prepare to experience some of the most exhilirating boss battles to ever grace a video game.

Shadow of the Colossus arrives on the PS4 on February 6, pre-order it today and get 25% OFF of a pre-played game or movie!

Monster Hunter World - Image 1
Monster Hunter World

Monster Hunter World

If you're not familiar with the Monster Hunter series, and the upcoming Monster Hunter: World, then let me ask you: Do you enjoy adrenaline-pumping, death-defying boss battles against towering monstrosities? Do you like exploring living, breathing worlds full of fantastic beasts that do more than wait around to be killed by you, the hero? Have you wondered what it would be like to hunt down and slay a dragon, then craft armor and weapons from the scales and bones you scavenge from it? If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, then I'm surprised you're still reading this and not off pre-ordering Monster Hunter: World.

While Monster Hunter games have garnered a cult following for years, Monster Hunter: World marks the series' foray onto next-gen consoles and promises to be the most visually arresting entry in the franchise. Your role as a monster hunter will be a daunting challenge, but if you use all of the tools at your disposal, including the environment itself, you'll stand a chance. With a fleet at your back and a Palico (cat-buddy) at your side, you might even live to face the elder dragon Zorah Magdaros.

Monster Hunter: World rears its ugly head on January 26, 2018 but you can preorder it today for the XBox One or PlayStation 4!

Dragon Ball FighterZ Goes Super Saiyan - Image 1
Dragon Ball FighterZ Goes Super Saiyan

Dragon Ball FighterZ Goes Super Saiyan

When video games are based on TV shows or movies, in this case the inimitable Dragon Ball Z, it's difficult to capture the essence of the original--whether due to technical limitations, art style, or the changes that are necessary for a video game adaptation to work. There have been great Dragon Ball Z games before, but I don't think any of them immerses you in the look and feel of the anime like Dragon Ball FighterZ, due out on January 26, 2018.

It's beautiful, really--the cel-shaded 3D characters are vibrant and animated, they look like they stepped right out of the series. The fighting is fast-paced and fluid, the special moves trigger epic animation sequences that double down on that feeling of authenticity, and the 2D arena lets you focus on a good, clean fight. The character roster is a who's who of Dragon Ball Z greats, from Goku in his many forms (including Super Saiyan Blue) to Buu, Cell, Hit, and Beerus. You can't just rely on your main, the 3v3 fighting style means you'll want to master a variety of fighters (fighterz?) if you want to be the best.

Dragon Ball FighterZ blasts onto PS4 and XBOX One on January 26, 2018, so practice your "Kamehameha!"s and pre-order it today to get a 25% OFF coupon on a pre-owned game or DVD!

Arcades & Heirlooms: A Vintage Video Game Experience - Image 1

Arcades & Heirlooms: A Vintage Video Game Experience

By the time most of my classmates were saving up to purchase a PlayStation 3, I was still raving about the late, great Sega Genesis. Games like Mortal Kombat and Tekken, with anchored backgrounds and minimal moves, were rendered obsolete by stealth shooters, headset communication, and pseudo-3D graphics, but my lack of resources led me to embrace retro video games and their steep learning curves.

It all started in the mid-nineties when the grade school version of myself inherited my older brother's obsolete Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). It came with old school games like Super Mario Bros., Super Contra, and Excitebike, all of which were released before I was even born. Still, I welcomed these vintage distractions and blew feverishly into the cartridges to prevent the accumulation of dust. In some ways, I became a budding video game historian, even venturing into the world of Pong and rummaging through the bins of tag sales for heirloom games to add to my growing collection.

If you'd asked a younger me whether I thought that retro games would come into fashion again, I probably would have answered yes. The 2016 release of the NES Classic tells me I am not the only one who longs to return to the times when Duck Hunt ruled the TV set. There is no denying the progress of modern games and realistic graphics, however vintage consoles will always hold a special place in my heart.

Among my favorite indulgences is Namco's 1994 release of Tekken, one of the first fighting games to use 3D animation. While it only scores a 75% approval rate on GameRankings, even the creator of Mortal Kombat has declared his appreciation for his competitor. While I wouldn't say that I am a cultish fan, I was thrilled to discover there is even a stand-alone arcade version of Tekken. I’m not planning to invest in an arcade machine anytime soon, but the coin-op version offers ample opportunity for friendly tournaments.

Another arcade machine that I’m always thrilled to see is the classic Donkey Kong, a video game mainstay. This iconic game was released by so many developers it's unlikely you haven't given it a try in one form or another; I happen to be a sucker for the Nintendo version. It’s hard to believe that the banana-chomping, muscled ape character was born way back in 1981. His creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, was a mastermind of design, as I’m sure you know. Next time you visit an arcade, look out for Mario’s first appearance in the original Donkey Kong, which predates the original Mario Bros. game.

By the time I reached high school, I was clutching Paperboy the way my friends were clutching copies of Halo for the XBOX. The difference in our preferences was colossal, but at least I could say I'd finished my games. Retro video game sentiment was rare back then—now, it has reached a point of maturity that is undeniable. Akin to a music expert's search for rare vinyl records, there are video game collectors that seek out and safeguard the mementos of the past, and I am proud to be one of them.

I find it hard to put into words why I prefer vintage video games to modern ones. However, since my life is constantly overrun with screens and technology, I guess I am desensitized to realistic graphics and underwhelmed by complex narratives. I believe that the original creators did their best to generate meaningful, creative games within their means. Simply put, I cannot deny the pure pleasure I get from eating magic mushrooms in Mario Bros. or wielding the Zapper alongside the duck-clutching puppy of Duck Hunt.

PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

100 enter. 1 leaves. Winner winner, chicken dinner.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds took the internet by storm when it was released in March 2017, dominating Twitch streams and quickly becoming the most popular PC game around. In PUBG, up to 100 players parachute onto a remote island where they must kill or be killed, scavenging for weapons and protection any way they can. The premise should be familiar; the concept of a survival arena has appeared in The Most Dangerous Game, Battle Royale, The Hunger Games, and countless other books and movies. PlayerUnknown (Brendan Greene) has been modding games for years to include a battle royale game mode, and PUBG is the ultimate realization of that work. Every match is a new and unpredictable experience--some opponents rampage with assault rifles, others bunker down in a hiding space and snipe players until the shrinking safe zones force them to move.

PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds parachutes down to the PS4 on December 7th! Pre-order your copy today and get 25% off a pre-played game or movie!

Review: Super Mario Odyssey - Image 1
Review: Super Mario Odyssey - Image 2 Review: Super Mario Odyssey - Image 3 Review: Super Mario Odyssey - Image 4

Review: Super Mario Odyssey

A lot has been said already about Super Mario Odyssey, a game that is every bit as much of a Nintendo Switch system-seller as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has been, and yet the heapings of praise it has received fall short of doing the game justice--it's just that good. So let me join the ranks of reviewers who have said this before me--let me throw my hat in the ring, if you will--and tell you why you have to play Super Mario Odyssey.

Super Mario Odyssey is a joy to play. Like Christmas morning got-what-you-asked-Santa-for joy. Like not wanting to put down the game long enough to write a review joy. Super Mario Odyssey is fun and fresh and intuitive and challenging in a way that few games achieve and which is especially difficult for a franchise that spans decades. It takes a gimmick--Mario's iconic hat, which can now be thrown to "capture" enemies and objects--and builds a world around it. A playground, really. The worlds of Odyssey are playgrounds where hat-throwing is your key to everything from fighting enemies to solving puzzles, and along the way you can body-snatch bad guys to gain exciting abilities. Wanna be a T-Rex? You can be! Wanna be a Goomba, or a stack of 20 Goombas? You can do that too! Wanna be an onion? It's more fun than you'd think! Every transformation gives you a new way to play.

Hats aside, Super Mario Odyssey just nails everything about being an open world 3D platformer. There's so much to explore--and so many secrets to uncover--that you're constantly engaged, always finding new things to push, throw, capture, or ground pound. Mario's controls are easy to learn, and the game even convinced me to play with detached Joy-Cons (omitting the grip) to make the most of the motion controls. That's honestly becoming my preferred way to play the Switch--my hands can be wherever they're comfortable, since the controllers aren't tethered by the grip or a cord. Classic Mario skills return--the triple jump, the wall jump, the backflip--and are supplemented by a variety of hat techniques that are rewarding to master (unlike the FLUDD in Super Mario Sunshine, which became tedious at times).

Odyssey's co-op mode is another excellent feature. At any time, a second player can jump into the game and control Cappy (Mario's hat), while Player 1 controls Mario. As Cappy you're invulnerable, but you have to protect Mario and capture enemies for him, which requires actual communication and teamwork. It's much more inclusive than the co-op in Super Mario Galaxy, for example, which only let Player 2 collect and shoot star-bits as a lame magical cursor or something.

It's hard for me to put my finger on what makes Super Mario Odyssey so special. I've really enjoyed every Mario game I've played, but this one takes the Frost-Frosted Cake. I feel like I'm 10 years-old again and playing Super Mario 64 for the first time, but finding there's so much more to it than I imagined. In fact, it's hard not to compare Odyssey to Super Mario 64 (a likeness which the game clearly embraces, as you'll discover) with its open world nature and mission-based Power Moon-hunting. Mario games are just more fun when you can explore freely without the pressure of a level timer.

I can't recommend Super Mario Odyssey highly enough. It's packed to the brim with imagination, the worlds within are colorful and vivid, and it captures the magic that video games inspired when we were kids. If you have a Nintendo Switch, you owe it to yourself to play this game; if you don't have a Switch, well, there's never been a better time to get one. Grab your favorite hat and get ready for an unforgettable adventure in Super Mario Odyssey!

Samus Returns in a New(ish) Metroid Game!

For every non-gamer who thinks that Link's name is Zelda, there's someone else who thinks that Samus Aran is some dude named Metroid. And like Link, she rarely gets her name in the title of her own game series. Metroid: Samus Returns might just change that.

Samus Returns is actually a complete remake of an original Game Boy game, Metroid II: Return of Samus. Along with a huge graphical overhaul, Samus Returns updates the original with mechanics, abilities, and innovations from more recent Metroid games, as well as introducing some brand new things to the franchise, like Aeion energy abilities and a melee counter attack. If you've been anxiously waiting for a new Metroid game, you'll need look no further than Samus Returns.

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle

Possibly the strangest title arriving this summer is Mario+Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, a tactical RPG starring Mario and friends alongside the zany Rabbids of Rayman fame. Crossovers may often come across as uninspired cashgrabs, but far be it from Nintendo to follow that formula; Kingdom Battle looks like a delightfully fun romp through the Mushroom Kingdom's battlefields. The Minions--I mean, the Rabbids--play over-the-top caricatures of Mario, Luigi, Peach, and their allies, but their silliness is counter-balanced by the "real" heroes. It's a recipe that might just work.

Mario is no stranger to RPGs, having previously appeared in the Paper Mario series, the Mario & Luigi series, and of course Super Mario RPG, however this is his first foray into the Tactical sub-genre. Kingdom Battle could very well become the Fire Emblem or Final Fantasy Tactics of this generation, introducing young gamers to a genre they weren't aware of. I just hope it's as fast-paced and fun as it looks!

Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle will arrive by warp pipe to the Nintendo Switch on August 29, so pre-order your copy today!

Splatoon 2: Ink Different

Only Nintendo could combine paintball, squid-people, and '90s kid culture to make a hit competitive team shooter like Splatoon. And with it arriving so late in the Wii U's lifespan, it's only natural that Splatoon 2 would be an early release on the Nintendo Switch.

In this splat-tastic sequel, players will dive headfirst into the world of Inkopolis, where one of the Squid Sisters has gone missing and the betentacled Octarians are acting fishy again. Turf War is is back, too, with new weapons, new battlefields, and improved mechanics, plus players will likely find the Switch Joy-Cons more suited to Splatoon than the Wii U gamepad was. Splatoon 2 will also introduce a brand new 4-player co-op mode, Salmon Run, in which players will work together to fight off waves of Salmonids and collect Power Eggs. Splatoon fans will be swimming in new features as they claim their territory in Splatoon 2!

Take up ARMS

From Mike Tyson's Punch-Out to Wii Sports' Boxing, Nintendo has always delivered the most iconic video games about boxing. They'll do it again with ARMS, perhaps their most unique take on the sport yet.

In ARMS, each colorful character follows a whimsical theme--springs, ribbons, ramen, and other stretchy things that their arms can be made out of. And where Wii Boxing felt like a tech demo for motion controls (albeit a really fun one), ARMS promises depth, character, vibrancy, and the option to play without motion controls. We can't wait to get our hands on ARMS!

We all have some fond--and not so fond--memories of high school, but who hasn't wished for the chance to do it over, better? Persona 5 is that opportunity!

In between volleyball practice and student council meetings, you can harness your personas (facets of your psyche unlocked by different masks) to explore dungeons and battle the dark forces that occupy them. But don't neglect your friends; relationships are a vital feature of Persona games, and your social prowess can power you up in battle!

Buddy Up with Yooka-Laylee!

What do you get when you combine a chameleon and a bat? Find out in Yooka-Laylee!

Colorful, chaotic, and chock-full of characters and collectibles, Yooka-Laylee is a new buddy platformer from Playtonic Games. Conceived by the minds who coined the buddy-duo genre with games like Donkey Kong Country and Banjo-Kazooie, Yooka-Laylee raised over $2.5 million from more than 80,000 Kickstarter backers, and it promises to be so much more than a spiritual successor.

Yooka (the chameleon) and Laylee (the bat) are an unlikely pair of heroes, to be sure. However, they’re the only ones who can stop the greedy Capital B and rescue the world’s books from his hostile takeover. Calling on an epic arsenal of special moves and zany friends, team Yooka-Laylee will tackle baddies, puzzles, and corporate buzzwords in their quest to save literacy.

Yooka-Laylee hearkens back to the N64 era, when platforming collectathons were king, with sprawling themed worlds, cartoony characters, and shiny objects hidden everywhere. But don’t worry: this charming adventure is rebooting the genre for today’s gamers with non-linear progression and a slew of new features, including multiplayer! So grab a buddy, and get ready for Yooka-Laylee!

Yooka-Laylee will be available on April 11 for PS4 and XBOX One, and later for the Nintendo Switch. Preorder it today!

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

For decades, perhaps centuries, the Master Sword has awaited a new hero to heed its call and take up arms against the evil that besets Hyrule. And that’s how long it feels like we’ve been waiting for Nintendo to release The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

It’s been over five years since Link’s last console adventure, Skyward Sword for the Wii, and while Hyrule Warriors was a fun diversion, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of a new Legend of Zelda game. Breath of the Wild promises an expansive world—12 times larger than Twilight Princess and 60% larger than Skyrim—that is diverse and alive, teeming with new monsters and harboring old friends. From the vibrant landscapes and detailed world-building, to the new story elements that seem to encompass the overall Zelda lore, to the joy of shield-surfing and hang-gliding as you explore a fresh Hyrule, Breath of the Wild feels like the most revolutionary Zelda title since Wind Waker graced the Gamecube in 2002.

Just watch the latest trailer and tell me it doesn’t give you chills:

Has Hyrule ever looked so gorgeous? Has Zelda ever felt more like a real person in real trouble? And did that one guy have a shark for a head?? Nintendo couldn’t have picked a better system-seller to launch with the Switch.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild will be available for Wii U and Nintendo Switch on March 3, 2017. Pre-order your copy today at any Just Press Play!

Who’s Cooking Mama? - Image 1
Who’s Cooking Mama? Who’s Cooking Mama? - Image 2 Who’s Cooking Mama? - Image 3

Who’s Cooking Mama?

Mama approaches, flames in her eyes as she spots the charred remnants of the croquettes that I have failed to master.  The potatoes were poorly peeled and my coating is uneven.  My mashed potatoes are lumpy.  They aren't even the right shape.  The feeling of disappointment in myself is only surpassed by the look on Mama's face.  My eyes brim with tears of shame.  She comes closer, utensils in hand.

"Don't worry, Mama will fix it."

Thankfully, that's only my cooking in real life.  In Cooking Mama, a series of casual cooking games on the Nintendo DS, 3DS, and Wii, I am a culinary master.

The premise is simple.  You are given a recipe which is broken down into a series of steps.  Recipes closely mimic their real-life counterparts.  The variety of recipes is quite good; dishes range from standard hamburgers to international fare such as takoyaki (ball-shaped snacks usually made with octopus).  Tasks are often as simple as slicing a tomato by utilizing the DS touch screen or Wii motion controls, and can last as little as ten seconds.  Successful attempts at these tasks garner the praise of the omnipotent Mama.  Failing to peel enough potatoes or letting your pot boil over are enough to bring her wrath.  Literal flames shoot from her eyes and you feel as though you have truly let Mama down.  You vow to do better and get at least a silver medal for your efforts.

As you progress and complete the initial menu items, you'll unlock more complicated recipes and variations on the ones you have already cooked.  More recent iterations of the series have moved beyond simple cooking.  There are mini-games that involve cleaning your house, as well as head-to-head competition with the computer or other players.  From Cooking Mama 3 on, you are tasked with picking up food at the grocery store as Mama's daughter, Ichigo.  These trips involve racing through the aisles and avoiding running into obstacles.  Good performance in these tasks can also unlock decorations for your kitchen, different colored pots and pans, and even new outfits for Mama.  You will want Mama to look pretty while she judges you, after all.

Mama has many other hobbies aside from cooking, and a multitude of games to reflect that.  There is a Crafting Mama, a Camping Mama, two Gardening Mama titles, and a Babysitting Mama.  Babysitting Mama deserves a particular mention.  In this Wii game, the player must insert a Wii remote into a stuffed baby doll.  Players are tasked with rocking the baby, burping the baby, and not shaking the baby.  Never shake the baby.  If the baby is shaken during the game, Mama will chastise, saying, "No no no, please don't shake the baby."

This is not a series to sit and play for hours.  Ideally it is played in small chunks; play a few recipes or mini-games and then take a break.  It's perfect for small bits of free time on the go, which makes the portable versions of Cooking Mama much more enjoyable than their Wii counterparts.  Personall,y I recommend the third and fourth iterations of Cooking Mama on the Nintendo DS and 3DS.  Is Cooking Mama serious?  No.  Does it feature a story?  No.  Is it still ridiculously enjoyable in short bursts of quirkiness?  Oh yes.  Worried you may not make the grade and destroy the family dinner?

Don't worry.

Mama will fix it.

Pokemon Sun and Moon - Image 1

Pokemon Sun and Moon

It has been over 20 years since we were first blessed with Pokémon Red and Pokémon Blue, and Pokémania continues to thrive today with Pokémon Go and the soon-to-be-released Pokémon Sun and Pokémon Moon. Fans of the franchise usually know what to expect with a new Pokémon release: you choose a starter Pokémon, collect the 8 gym badges, defeat the evil team, and complete your journey by challenging the Elite Four. This year, however, Sun and Moon will shake up the formula that so many Pokéfans have come to expect.

Pokémon Sun and Moon are set in a new region, Alola, which is based on real world Hawaii and borrows many themes from Hawaiian history and culture. This inspired one of the biggest changes in the franchise’s history: there are no gyms in Pokémon Sun and Moon. They’ve been replaced by Island Trials, where your trainer is tasked with completing one of a myriad of different activities. After some of the Trials, you’ll face off against a Totem Pokémon who is bigger and more powerful than its standard version, and who can call in a second Pokémon to make the battle harder. The Island Trial and Totem Pokémon features aim build on the ideas of gyms in previous entries, while also adding some flair.

Some other new or updated features that players can expect include no longer having to use HMs, a Pokémon Snap-like camera mini-game, and interdimensional beings called Ultra Beasts that will obviously tie into the story somehow. It also seems like this game takes place before the Alola region has an Elite Four, based on one of the latest trailers. Perhaps that will be a part of the story as well.

With all of the formula changes shaking up the gameplay, and many new Pokémon to catch and befriend, Pokémon Sun and Moon look to be great additions to the long running Pokémon franchise. If you’d like to have a taste of the game now, before release, there is a demo available on the Nintendo 3DS eShop for download. Pokémon Sun and Moon release November 18th, 2016. Stop in at your local Just Press Play any time before release and reserve a copy for yourself!

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Image 1
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Image 2 Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - Image 3

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is a 2D side-scroller with RPG elements that was released on the Playstation in 1997.  As in many of the Castlevania games, your goal is to traverse the castle fighting demons and the undead until you reach the end and defeat Dracula.  In a unique twist, SotN starts with you as Richter Belmont fighting the final battle of the previous game, Castlevania: Rondo of Blood. Then the story switches to a mysterious new character, Alucard, as he enters Dracula's castle.  After a close encounter with Death, Alucard is stripped of his equipment and items, left to face the castle with only his wits and courage.  Throughout the rest of Alucard's journey, he unravels the mystery of Dracula's castle and confronts not only Dracula, but an unexpected servant of evil.

Castlevania: SotN is a triumphant resurrection, widely regarded as one of the greatest games in the Castlevania series.  It introduced RPG elements, like leveling up to gain stat boosts and additional health and magic, and helped pioneer the "Metroidvania" genre.  As Alucard, you learn how to transform into a wolf, a bat, and a mist cloud to enter new areas in Dracula's castle.  One of the things I most enjoyed about this game was the huge map.  There are so many hidden areas to explore and, if you meet certain conditions, you can even open up a whole new second castle to explore.

Symphony of the Night is an all-around great game.  The story is excellent; the voice acting superb.  There is a large variety of enemies to vanquish and equipment to unearth.  Exploring both castles is a gripping challenge and finding all the hidden items and abilities was a thrill.  Adding in the level up system encourages you to kill as many enemies as possible, and makes for a more satisfying experience.  I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoys the Castlevania series or even RPGs in general.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night has since been released for the Xbox 360 and also appears on the PSP as a part of the Dracula X Chronicles.

Storm the Battlefield

It's war like you've never seen before, in EA's stunning new addition to the Battlefield series, Battlefield 1. The iconic weapons and vehicles of World War I will aid you as you wage war across deserts and countryside villages, through forest labyrinths and luxrious ballrooms, and even in the perilous skies above the battlefield.

Instead of focusing on one character, the single player campaign of Battlefield 1 is presented as an anthology of war stories that span the full breadth of the Great War and the people who fought on its frontlines. You'll cross paths with historic figures, like Lawrence of Arabia, and take part in legendary offensives. And the weapons--you're going to love the weapons. From brutal clubs to the earliest machine guns, Battlefield 1 arms you with a unique and varied arsenal that feels authentic to the time period. There are tanks and bi-planes and battleships--oh my!--to complete this sandbox of destruction.

Did I mention that the multiplayer supports up to 64 players? Now that's what I call war.
